Claire Ady from Wed In Central Park
James: [00:00:03] Hi Claire! Thanks so much for joining me today.
Claire: [00:00:06] Hi, it’s nice to join you.
James: [00:00:08] Excellent. So you arrange weddings in Central Park, which is fantastic. We came across this question that is getting asked quite a lot, and it goes a little something like this.
“Why elope to Central Park for my wedding?”
Claire: [00:00:27] There are so many reasons. If you’re thinking of eloping, then New York is a really good choice for British couples. It’s not too far. It’s about eight hours on the plane. There are lots of cheap flights going over there at the moment. You could fly for under £250 if you get the right time. It doesn’t take long to get there and it is super easy to get married in New York, compared to getting married in the UK, or many other European countries. So what happens is, when you arrive in New York you can go to City Hall, you go and pick up a license. You then wait 24 hours, and then you get married. And that’s it. So it’s super, super easy.
New York is an amazing place to visit, there’s so much to do there.
And to my mind Central Park, it’s the most beautiful place in New York. It’s completely different from the rest of the city. So you’re in this lovely oasis of calm and greenery and beauty, in the center of this very busy island, with so much going on, that has something for everybody. So to me it’s the perfect place to elope.
James: [00:01:50] Fantastic. We visited New York a couple of years ago and I just feel that of all the places we’ve ever visited in the world, everything included, it is absolutely and utterly unique. Like you say, there is literally something for everybody. An absolutely incredible experience.
So I think New York is a good choice, because whatever the brides and grooms kind of are into, there will be something to cater for their interests and keep them entertained.
Claire: [00:02:18] Yeah I think so. I mean there’s so many things going on there, depending on what time of year. There’s lots of different things. If you’re interested in the arts or shows, the Broadway shows, there’s the touring different music shows. There’s all the different kind of sports events that are taking place there. If you like museums or if you’re into fashion, or if you like history, there’s so much to see and do there that will make it a memorable trip. And when you look back on it, as you know, that’s the place we got married, there were also all these other awesome things that we did. And…
from what I’m told, if you get married and you keep your wedding gear on, then you will get treated very well on the day of your wedding, as you go through the streets of New York.
And New Yorkers are a really friendly people that will shout out their congratulations. Some couples have told me that they’ve been to see a Broadway show after they got married and they’ll get upgrades and get better deals in restaurants. So that’s a tip if you do decide to elope to New York, is wear your wedding gown and keep it on.
James: [00:03:25] I think that’s something that we definitely found, that you would have thought that New York being an absolutely massive city, would be quite an unfriendly place. But we found the complete opposite to be the case and the people there are absolutely fantastic. So I think “married” with that tip that you just gave, I think that’s a win, win. Sure.
Claire: [00:03:42] Yeah. It has a bad reputation for being unfriendly. But I lived there for a year and it was a really friendly place.
James: [00:03:55] Excellent. So yes, I can imagine also because it’s such a big place, and Central Park itself is massive.
The whole concept of getting married in New York might be incredibly, would be, incredibly overwhelming for people.
So I guess that’s where you come in. So do you want to just tell us a little bit about how you can help couples to plan through all that madness, and make something special for themselves.
Claire: [00:04:21] Yeah it’s a great place because it does offer so much choice, but then that choice can end up being, as you say, overwhelming. Also there’s a trust issue. And I find couples can get nervous about handing money over to somebody over the Internet, that they never met. And whilst they might have that feeling about me, I’ve got online reviews in lots of different places that show that we’ve been running since 2011.
We’ve done hundreds of weddings. We don’t let people down and the people that I work with don’t want to let me down.
What I found when couples have maybe used me to plan their wedding ceremony, and perhaps they’ve booked some things themselves to save some money, sometimes they can be let down. I had a couple last year who booked their own photographer and the photographer moved. They left the city and moved to New Orleans. Because they’ve got nothing to lose. But my guys don’t let me down because they do have a lot to lose, and it’s our working relationship.
Claire: [00:05:33] So I can ask the right questions that would allow a couple to make a really solid plan of their day. So because I’ve done this lots of times, I know what a good process is. So I will help make a good robust plan for the day.
The couple can be really relaxed knowing that it’s all going to go to plan…
and they know that whoever they booked through me, so an officiant, photographer, video, flowers, hair and makeup, transport, music, all those things, they know they’re going to be there and they know when, where and who, is going to be involved with their wedding, and that we’re all very clear on everything.
James: [00:06:13] Love it. Fantastic. So we’ve actually just got a fun quick question for you, and that is New York focused, Central Park focused. “What is best about summer weddings in Central Park and what is best about Winter weddings in Central Park?”
Claire: [00:06:32] I got married on the 1st of July, so I do like a summer wedding. Best thing about it for me, when I got married in Central Park, I lived on the Upper East Side, the whole of Manhattan is very hot and humid in the summer.
The minute you step into Central Park, that’s the coolest place on those hot days because of the greenery. It doesn’t hold in heat, like all that concrete does. So it’s actually the loveliest place to be, in New York in the summer.
The most common worry I have from my clients is what happens if it rains? You’re not likely to see any rain during the summer in New York. So that kind of cancels out that problem. The main drawback people tell me getting married in the summer, my photographers tell me, is that bright, bright sunlight. So I usually have couples keep that in mind when planning their day, as to what time they want the ceremony, and what time they want their photos, to try and avoid that bright sunlight. Or to be somewhere shaded or with nice light. So I work quite closely with my photographers and over the years they’ve given me lots of tips and advice, and complain to me when I do book a wedding at 2 pm, when the sun’s really bright, and everyone’s going to be squinting and looking horrible.
Claire: [00:07:56] Winter, you avoid all that. You avoid that bright, bright sunlight. It depends on your tastes.
Central Park looks beautiful in the spring, as everything is blossoming. In the summer, the flowers are blooming. In the autumn, leaves are changing. And in the winter you might get snow, where it’s really stunning.
New York is very, very cold in the winter. I’ve had a bride tell me she wore thermals under her gown. Other brides have indoor shoes and outdoor shoes, or have a nice coat to wear. Or perhaps for the ceremony, which they take off for the photos. It depends what you like, but I think Central Park is stunning in the winter. I do love doing Winter weddings. However I chose July because I’m not a fan of the cold. So it all depends on your taste. But that’s why New York is so wonderful, is that, again, there’s something for everybody. Whatever you like, it will deliver for you. And that’s what makes my job so easy, because Central Park never disappoints. It’s so beautiful and there’s so much to do in New York. You’re never going to be bored.
James: [00:09:13] Amazing. That’s great. Thank you so much. So yeah. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and your experience with us. That’s been awesome. And we look forward to speaking to you again soon Claire. So thanks again.
Claire: [00:09:26] Thank you. Bye.
James: [00:09:26] Bye!
